American Red Cross Central North Carolina Chapter
The American Red Cross Central NC Chapter is dedicated to saving lives and helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. We assist more than one half million military families each year with emergency communication services. The Red Cross chapters are at work in the communites helping their neighbors in need, no matter what their social or financial status.

The Arc of Durham County
The Arc of Durham is a nonprofit agency dedicated to serving people with mental retardation and other disabilities, and their families.

The Augustine Project
The Augustine Project trains and supports volunteer tutors who provide free, long-term, one-on-one instruction in reading, writing and spelling to low income children and teens who struggle with literacy skills.

Blue Ribbon Youth Leadership Institute
Blue Ribbon Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) seeks to provide youth with leadership skills necessary for them to become servant leaders in their communities, to make meaningful contributions to their communities, and to be advocates for change. The Blue Ribbon Youth Leadership Institute is the high school leadership development component of the Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate Program. The program impacts students teaching leadership skills such as goal setting, team building, planning and service implementation. Students are able to develop skills learned by implementing service projects.

Boat People SOS
To assist Vietnamese refugees and immigrants in their search for a life in liberty and dignity; by empowering, equipping and organizing Vietnamese American communities in their progress toward self-sufficiency.

Bridges Pointe Sickle Cell Foundation
Providing social support and sickle cell education to empower adolescents and young adults with sickle cell disease for independent lving and an enhanced quality of life.

Caring House, Inc
Caring House is a home-away-from-home for adult outpatients of the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Carnivore Preservation Trust
CPT is a wildlife sanctuary that provides homes to carnivores in need of rescue and educates the public about what threatens these animals in their natural habitat, in the pet trade, and in the entertainment industry. CPT currently cares for 90 animals of eight different species including: tigers (one white tiger), leopards (spotted and black), caracals, servals, ocelots, binturongs, kinkajous, and a civet. We offer public tours on the weekends, private tours during the week, and all tours are by reservation only.

Carolina Theatre

College Student Interest Group in Neuroscience
We are a non-profit group of college students that are interested in neuroscience. We participated in this event last year and raised money for the National Parkinson's Foundation -- we plan on doing this again next year.

The Cornucopia House Cancer Support Center
At Cornucopia House people with cancer learn that they are not alone, that there is hope, and that they can affect the quality of their lives. Our programs and services support and empower individuals and families with cancer to explore the best choices for their own approach. Free services to people touched by cancer. Stop by for a cup of tea, browse the library, attend an educational forum or support session, join a gentle yoga class, allow yourself some moments of peace with compassionate touch.

Council for Senior Citizens
The Council for Senior Citizens has served Durham’s Seniors for nearly 60 years. We operate the Durham Center for Senior Life, located just downtown near the Durham Central Park. The Council also operates seven other satellite centers to better serve older adults through out Durham County. These centers offer a variety of activities as well as a nutritional meal. Our Adult Day Service, located at the downtown site, provides a structured day program for older adults who may have some difficulty managing on their own because of frailty or the effects of disease. No matter the age, one can expect to have a good experience and have fun at any of the Council’s sites when visited.

The Dave Brumitt Fund for Gastric and Esophogeal Cancer
The fund was organized in memory of Dave Brumitt, who lost his battle with this cancer in 2003. To date, the foundation has funded two pilot studies at UNC and NCCU. The foundation has used a bike ride as its primary fundraiser and is looking to branch out in other ways.

Duke Children's Reach Out and Read
Duke Children's Reach Out and Read is a non-profit agency dedicated to promote literacy in children. Our main strategy is by exposing our pediatric population to books and by promoting reading time with parents. We accomplish this by providing our patients with age-appropriate books free of charge at each well child visit beginning at their six-month visit.

Durham Central Park, Inc
Durham Central Park, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a unique, 5-acre urban park for the citizens of Durham that provides a variety of activities, with an emphasis on the arts, and serves as a focus for efforts to rejuvenate the surrounding neighborhood.

Durham Companions, Inc.
Durham Companions is a Governor's One-on-One Mentoring Program for court involved/at-risk youth between the ages of 6-17. Our goal is to provide consistent and positive adult role models to youth for one year.

Durham Literacy Center
The Durham Literacy Center (DLC), is a volunteer, community-based organization providing tuition-free, literacy instruction to adults and out-of-school youth throughout Durham County. Our offerings include Adult Literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), the Teen Career Academy (GED - high school equivalency examination preparation) for out-of-school youth, Family Literacy (parents and children working together), and workplace literacy.

Elata Foundation
The Elata Foundation seeks to advance research into treatments of major depression, to promote awareness and education into the emerging technology of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as a treatment for those who suffer from major depression, and to give hope to those debilitated by depression who have found no treatment that works besides TMS.

Family Provider Network, Inc.
The Family Provider Network was organized to provide professional support to family childcare providers in Wake County. We provide individual consultations on issues concerning licensure and business development. We advocate at the local and state level for family providers, and we support families with child care referrals, pre-school gaduation, and scholarship awards.

Follow the Child Montessori School
Our nonprofit school welcomes, serves, and challenges children from 18 months through sixth grade in an environment that is directed and invigorated by the time-tested principles and standards of Dr. Maria Montessori. Community Connections is our family based service learning program that connects families with opportunities to serve our local and global communities. In conjunction with our Upper Elementary students, we are raising money to support the work of Free the Children. Free the Children is a youth driven organization whose aim is to reduce childhood exploitation and poverty through education and community development in many third world countries.

Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina
Established in 1980, the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina is a non-profit organization that provides food to people at risk of hunger in 34 counties in central and eastern North Carolina. In 2005-06, the Food Bank distributed over 31.4 million pounds of food through 890 partner agencies including soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and after school programs for children. The Food Bank's Durham Branch is located on Gilbert St. east of downtown Durham.

Habitat for Humanity of Durham
Habitat for Humanity of Durham transforms lives and communities by making homeownershp possible in parnterhips with people who care. Habitat has broken ground on more than 180 homes since 1985. Together we're building homes, hope and community in Durham!

Hoop Dreams provides recreational opportunities and social support for children with life-threatening illnesses.

HOPE worldwide KenyaKids - Triangle Church
HOPE worldwide's KenyaKids Child Sponsorship Program serves children who live in poverty and who have a compromised nutritional and health status. The program serves orphans and vulnerable school-aged children who live in Nairobi, Kenya by providing nutrition, medical care, clothing (including school uniforms) and basic school supplies. The donations will help to provide the resources needed to assist these children in breaking the cycle of poverty that grips them.

HOPE worldwide KenyaKids - Durham Academy
HOPE worldwide's KenyaKids Program serves children who live in poverty and who have a compromised nutritional and health status. The program serves orphans and vulnerable school-aged children who live in Nairobi, Kenya by providing nutrition, medical care, clothing (including school uniforms) and basic school supplies. The Durham Academy KenyaKids club is raising donations to help support the Kenyan children who need the assistance to meet their potential in life.

John Umstead Hospital Volunteer Services
JUH is a regional state supported psychiatric hospital. Volunteer Services supports special needs to enhance the lives of our patients.

JLD is a program designed to provide high school sophmores with an in-depth knowledge of the Durham community and to assist them in developing their leadership skills.

Kidney Coaching Foundation
The Kidney Coaching Foundation (KCF) is a not-for-profit organization that delivers life coaching and personal development programs to adolescent and young adults ages 12-21 who have kidney disease. We provide each member of our program with a trained volunteer coach who guides them in acquiring the tools necessary to comply with their medical treatment, and also helps them to navigate the dual complexities and challenges of life as a young adult experiencing the effects of life with kidney disease.

Kids Connect
Kids Connect is a unique initiative that seeks to develop tomorrow's good citizens today - encouraging a child's awareness of and capacity to care for others and for the community as a whole. We encourage, support and facilitate kids and youth engaging in positive, community building experiences. Established in 1975, Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc. delivers hot, nutritious meals to Durham County residents who are unable to provide or prepare meals for themselves. Since its inception, Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc. has served more than one million meals through the generous help and support of its staff, volunteers, donors and sponsors.

Museum of Life and Science

National Farm Worker Ministry
The National Farm Worker Ministry educates and mobilizes the religious and broader community in support of farmworkers who are organizing for justice, empowerment and equality. Our Durham, NC office advocates in the state legislature, with enforcement agencies and in the fields for improved farmworker living and working conditions.

North Carolina Therapeutic Riding Center
The North Carolina Therapeutic Riding Center (NCTRC) founded in 1977, is one of the oldest therapeutic riding programs in North Carolina. NCTRC brings the fun and excitement of horseback riding to children and adults with disabilities.

Operation M.E.N.D., Inc.
Operation M.E.N.D (Maintaining Elder Neighbors in Durham) works to enrich the lives of seniors living in their own homes by providing simple home repairs and lawn care.

The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church, has been supporting residents of Durham, Orange, and Person counties in God’s name without discrimination since 1910. More than 31 million Americans received assistance from The Salvation Army last year. Local services include a Boys & Girls Club (celebrating its 70th anniversary this year!), a new Teen Center, food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, outreach to the elderly and ill, and clothing and comfort for the homeless. About 83 cents of every dollar raised goes to program support nationwide.

Schoolhouse of Wonder
Schoolhouse of Wonder is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit environmental education and wilderness skill mentoring organization dedicated to providing direct experiences with nature for youth, teens, and adults in our community.

SEEDS
SEEDS empowers kids and adults through gardening, environmental education and healthy eating. Our programs include SEEDlings after-school program; DIG (Durham Inner-city Gardeners), a teen market garden and life skills program; Community Harvest for families and individuals to grow their own vegetable plot at SEEDS; and Urban Earth, healthy eating and healthy environment program in the schools.

Senior PHARMAssist
Senior PHARMAssist is a local non-profit who promotes healthier living for Durham seniors by providing personalized help regarding medication therapy management, paying for needed medications, health education, and medical & social referrals. We also help any Medicare beneficiary, regardless of age or income, with sorting through Medicare-approved prescription drug plans. Senior PHARMAssist also provides information about Prescription Assistance Programs and other services to individuals who do not have prescription insurance.

Special Olympics North Carolina
Special Olympics North Carolina offers year-round sports training and athletic competitions to more than 38,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities within the state.

STANDUP FOR KIDS
STANDUP FOR KIDS is the nation’s largest volunteer organization working with and for runaway, homeless and street-dependent youth. We train our volunteers to go to the streets to tell youth that we care ­ and then we prove it. We offer hope and friendship to kids who are desperate to survive and to make sense of life in general. We do street outreach providing youth in the Triangle area with basic necessities. We encourage street-dependent and at-risk youth to stay in school. We provide the encouragement and support to aid these youth back into our community.

Strengthening Families Coalition
The Strengthening Families Coalition (SFC) works to help close the academic achievement gap through strengthening parent involvement, advocacy, and leadership. SFC aids families in navigating the public schools through Parent & Family Advocacy and Support Training (PFAST), as well as, Parents As Leaders(PAL) Academy and Latino PFAST(LPFAST) in Spanish. Members of the coalition include parents, grandparents, organizations, and volunteers. SFC is based at Durham Cooperative Extension.

Traction
Traction is a civic generator, turning young people into energized and engaged citizens who will shape public policy and ultimately change the direction of the country. Our social network model turns young Durham voters into engaged citizens, advocates, word-of-mouth marketers, force multipliers and eventually board members and candidates. We engage around the core issues of environment, civil rights, health care, economic justice, fair elections, education, peace.

Triangle Impact
Triangle Impact, an affiliate of Points of Light & Hands On Network, connects residents of the Triangle to rewarding volunteer opportunities with community agencies throughout the region. By developing and coordinating projects that are scheduled on nights and weekends and can be completed in just a few hours, we make meaningful community involvement possible for even the busiest individual.  Additionally, Triangle Impact assists corporations in giving back to the community by coordinating high-impact team-building volunteer opportunities.

The mission of Urban Ministries of Durham is to sustain the physical, spiritual and emotional health of homeless, hungry and low-income people in Durham County. We offer food, clothing, shelter and supportive services to all in a welcoming environment that affirms the dignity of those we serve.
