Durham County DSS Volunteer Program

"Making a Difference, One Neighbor at a Time."

The DSS Volunteer Program is coordinated by the Volunteer Center of Durham for the Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) community.

This program promotes self-sufficiency by providing clients with volunteers willing to spend time teaching essential skills, exposing clients to new opportunities and events, researching necessary resources for the clients, and serving as a positive adult role model or companion.

Service Projects

Volunteer Programs
The mission of the DSS Volunteer Program is to improve the lives of the DSS clients, enabling them to become self-sufficient through the use of dedicated volunteers and provide economic or in-kind assistance to eligible clients throughout the year.

These efforts work to:
•Increase clients’ social and cultural awareness
•Improve clients’ academic performance
•Assist clients in finding necessary resources
•Assist elderly/disabled clients in maintaining independence
•Provide nurturing relationships to clients in need of them

The DSS Volunteer Program envisions a community where every person, young and old, experience nurturing one-on-one relationships and receive necessary resources when needed, which help them develop their full potential.
